When to go

Time: Choose the earliest practical standard tour departure for a calmer interior visit; check in 15 minutes early. · Visit at blue hour or sunset for the strongest sails, Harbour Bridge and city-light views. · Arrive 45–60 minutes before a performance if you want harbour views, a drink and cloakroom time before curtain.
Avoid: Standard, Backstage and Mobility Access tours are unavailable on 25 and 31 December 2026; New Year’s Eve and Vivid nights can bring access and transport restrictions.

Getting out: After a performance, walk back to Circular Quay for trains, ferries and buses; allow 10–15 minutes in crowds, luggage or with children. Do not plan on driving away immediately after a major show: the 1,200-bay Wilson Sydney Opera House Car Park is beneath the building, but post-show exits are unpleasant. Use the Macquarie Street taxi/private-car rank rather than expecting pickup at the forecourt. For a show, arrive 45–60 minutes before curtain and allow a further 20–40 minutes to clear Circular Quay afterward.
Food & drink: Opera Bar is the casual, harbour-view choice; Midden is a more substantial sit-down meal; Bennelong is the special-occasion fine-dining option. Tour & Dine combines the standard tour with a set meal and drink at Opera Bar, Midden or Winnie’s, redeemable from 11:30am to 6pm on the booked date. Food and drink may be consumed in foyers, but auditoria generally permit bottled water only; event conditions can vary. Do not bring BYO alcohol or glass containers. Large bags, backpacks, umbrellas, suitcases and prams are not permitted in auditoria and cloakroom capacity is limited.
Tours: Book a timed guided tour directly with Sydney Opera House in advance. The standard Sydney Opera House Tour is a one-hour interior tour, A$50 pre-booked (A$55 on the day), but involves up to 2.5 km of walking and about 300 stairs. Check in at the Welcome Centre, Lower Concourse, 15 minutes before departure. For step-free access, reserve the one-hour Mobility Access Tour (A$50), daily at 11:30am or 2:45pm, checking in at Stage Door beneath the Monumental Steps. For a behind-the-scenes experience, book the 7am Backstage Tour: A$199, maximum 12 guests, about 2 hours 15 minutes with breakfast; arrive at Stage Door by 6:45am, book no later than 5pm the previous day, and wear closed, flat rubber-soled shoes. It is unavailable 25 and 31 December 2026. Tours operate around performance activity, so auditorium access and routes can vary.
