Jersey City, Hoboken and Liberty State Park
Base · 2–3 days
The strongest urban base in the state: Hudson walks, serious food, easy PATH and ferry connections, and the practical New Jersey departure point for Liberty and Ellis islands. Stay in Jersey City for range; use Hoboken for a tighter, more walkable waterfront weekend.
Newark and Montclair
Short stop · 1 day
Newark earns a deliberate stop for Ironbound Portuguese and Brazilian food, NJPAC and the Newark Museum of Art; Montclair supplies the leafy arts-and-restaurant counterpoint. This is a purposeful urban day, not a place to wander without a plan.
Morristown and the Morris Hills
A handsome historic-town break from the Hudson corridor, with Washington’s winter encampment sites, a usable downtown and wooded country close by. It works best as a one- or two-night history-and-foliage base.
The Skylands and Delaware Water Gap
Base · 2 days
Northwest New Jersey is where the state stops looking suburban: Kittatinny Ridge hikes, river roads, paddling, farms and Delaware Water Gap access. Bring a car and leave room for weather or closure changes rather than overplanning trail days.
Princeton
Base · 1–2 days
New Jersey’s most satisfying inland first-stop: university architecture, Nassau Street, bookstores, cafés and a compact center you can cover on foot. One full day is usually enough, but it is an easy place to linger overnight.
Lambertville and the Delaware River towns
Short stop · 1 day
A compact Delaware River base for antiques, galleries, cafés, canal-path walks and slow weekends. Pair it with Princeton or use it for a deliberately unhurried rural escape; on its own, it is too small for a long itinerary.
Sandy Hook, Highlands and the Northern Shore
The best Shore day trip from the north combines ocean and bay beaches with Fort Hancock, the lighthouse and Manhattan skyline views. Go for landscape and history rather than boardwalk rides, and arrive early in summer.
Asbury Park, Ocean Grove and Red Bank
Base · 2 days
This is the central Shore’s most convincing year-round cluster: Asbury for music, bars and murals; Ocean Grove for quiet Victorian streets; Red Bank for restaurants and shows. It is the Shore choice for adults who want more than a beach day.
Long Beach Island, Barnegat and Island Beach State Park
Choose this stretch for proper barrier-island time—beaches, cycling, surf, fishing and dunes—not urban sightseeing. Island Beach State Park is the useful wild counterweight to Long Beach Island’s built-up summer towns.
Atlantic City and Hammonton
Base · 2 days
Atlantic City is for casino hotels, boardwalk excess, nightlife and a broad free beach; Hammonton adds blueberry country, farms and Italian-American food inland. The contrast is the point, but do not mistake Atlantic City for a quaint resort town.
Cape May, Wildwoods and the Southern Shore
Base · 2–3 days
Cape May is the state’s fullest seaside stay, with Victorian streets, strong dining, beaches and birding; the Wildwoods deliver free sand, neon motels and rides. Pick Cape May for atmosphere and the Wildwoods for family-scale boardwalk energy.
Car-free north Jersey sampler
5 daysJersey City, Hoboken and Liberty State Park (3 days) → Newark and Montclair (1 day) → Princeton (1 day)
For first-timers without a car. Base in Jersey City rather than trying to hotel-hop: do Liberty and Ellis properly, use Hoboken for the waterfront, make Newark a food-and-culture day, then take the rail connections for Princeton. Do not pretend this is a Shore itinerary.

8 daysJersey City, Hoboken and Liberty State Park (2 days) → Princeton (2 days) → Asbury Park, Ocean Grove and Red Bank (2 days) → Cape May, Wildwoods and the Southern Shore (2 days)
The sensible first trip if you have a car after leaving the Hudson. It balances the state’s best urban base, Princeton’s compact inland appeal, a central-Shore music-and-beach stay, and Cape May’s more complete seaside finish. Keep transfer days light; summer traffic can wreck any itinerary that tries to add three stops en route.

For travelers who want the version of New Jersey that includes ridge hikes, river towns, college streets, music venues, casino absurdity and the southern Shore—not just a fast lap of boardwalks. This is a driving route. Treat the northwest-to-coast and coast-to-south-coast moves as real transfer days, not opportunities to cram in extra attractions.
