Visas & entry
Louisiana follows United States entry rules. Visa Waiver Program travelers generally need an approved ESTA for eligible short visits; many other nationalities need a U.S. visitor visa. Passport, ESTA and visa rules can change, so verify with U.S. Customs and Border Protection or the U.S. embassy before booking.
Getting in
Getting around
New Orleans is the exception: stay in the French Quarter edge, CBD/Warehouse District, Marigny or Lower Garden District and use walking, streetcars and rideshare. For Lafayette, Acadiana loops, wetlands, River Parishes, Bayou Country and all of north Louisiana, rent a car; public transport does not join the experiences travelers come for. Keep driving days short, allow for I-10 and Baton Rouge congestion, and do not depend on rideshares for a return from plantations or remote wetland sites.
Money
The U.S. dollar is used throughout. Cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for small tips, bars, markets and rural stops; customary tipping is expected for table service, bartenders, guides and drivers. Parking and valet charges can be substantial in New Orleans.
