Greater Phoenix and Scottsdale
The practical flight gateway and soft landing for a road trip, with strong museums, desert-garden walks, resorts and food. Stay here for urban comfort, not for a compact walking city or a wilderness experience.

Tucson
Arizona's most convincing food city and the best base for understanding the Sonoran borderlands. Use it for Saguaro National Park, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Mount Lemmon and serious Mexican and Sonoran cooking.

Sedona and the Verde Valley
The state's easiest red-rock payoff: hike Sedona's buttes, then use Cottonwood, Jerome or Clarkdale for a less clogged and less expensive Verde Valley stay. It works brilliantly as a Phoenix extension, but central Sedona is crowded enough to punish an unplanned weekend.

Flagstaff
A real mountain town rather than a resort enclave, with pines, breweries, Route 66 and a useful position for northern Arizona. It is the sensible cool-weather base for Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater, Wupatki and the wider high country.

Grand Canyon South Rim
The year-round, dependable Grand Canyon experience and the essential first-visit stop. Sleep at or near the rim so you can see both sunset and morning light rather than reducing it to a parking-lot viewpoint.

Page
A functional but strategically placed base for Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Lake Powell and Glen Canyon. Come for the surrounding landscape; book guided Antelope Canyon access before treating Page hotels as flexible.

Monument Valley and Navajo Nation country
The iconic butte landscape is worth the remote overnight when approached as Navajo land rather than a film-location checklist. A Navajo-guided trip adds access and context that the rough standard drive does not.

Canyon de Chelly and Chinle
A deeper, quieter Navajo Nation stop than Page, with inhabited canyon country, cliff dwellings and guided canyon-floor access. It merits a planned overnight, not a rushed detour between major parks.

Petrified Forest National Park and Winslow
An easy but surprisingly varied Colorado Plateau stop: Painted Desert overlooks, badlands, fossilized wood and Route 66 remnants. It fits naturally between northeastern Arizona and Flagstaff, with Winslow adding railroad-town character.

Bisbee, Tombstone, Sonoita and southeastern Arizona
Arizona's best southern loop for mining-town character, Old West history, birding, vineyards and mountain scenery. Bisbee is the keeper; Tombstone is knowingly theatrical, while Chiricahua and Sonoita reward travelers who linger.

Arizona essentials
7 daysGreater Phoenix and Scottsdale (1 day) → Sedona and the Verde Valley (2 days) → Flagstaff (1 day) → Grand Canyon South Rim (2 days) → Greater Phoenix and Scottsdale (1 day)
The right first Arizona trip for most people: Phoenix access, red rocks, a mountain-town reset and enough time at the South Rim to avoid a drive-by. It deliberately skips Page and Monument Valley rather than pretending long transfer days are sightseeing.

For travelers who want the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon and Monument Valley in one coherent northbound road trip. The final return to Phoenix is a long driving day, so add a Flagstaff night if you can spare an eleventh day.

A proper statewide circuit for travelers with two weeks, combining headline scenery with Navajo Nation country, the Painted Desert and Tucson's food-and-desert identity. Fly into Phoenix and out of Tucson, or accept a final transfer back to Phoenix.

7 daysTucson (3 days) → Bisbee, Tombstone, Sonoita and southeastern Arizona (3 days) → Greater Phoenix and Scottsdale (1 day)
The better winter alternative for travelers who would rather eat well, hike among saguaros and explore borderlands history than wrestle with Sedona crowds or high-country snow. Base in Tucson first, then slow down in Bisbee and the surrounding southeast before departing from Phoenix.
