Worth a half-day or longer for its landmark Victorian glasshouses, vast living collections and gardens; it works best if you allow at least 4–5 hours and arrive near opening.
Buy daytime tickets online
Standard daytime admission does not normally sell out, but buying on Kew’s official ticket page is cheaper than paying at the gate; buy at the gate only if online purchase is inconvenient.
MorePrebook Christmas at Kew
The separate illuminated evening trail runs on selected dates from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, requires a booked entry slot and can sell out, especially in December.
MoreEnter through Victoria Gate
For most visitors, use Victoria Gate (TW9 3JR), a roughly 7-minute walk from Kew Gardens station; arrive at opening for quieter paths and glasshouses.
MoreAllow four to five hours
Prioritize the Palm House, Temperate House, Princess of Wales Conservatory, galleries and one outdoor circuit; major attractions close before the grounds, so do not leave a first visit until late afternoon.

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is a 121-hectare (roughly 300-acre) botanic garden on the Thames in southwest London, founded in 1759 from Princess Augusta’s royal pleasure-ground garden. It grew into Britain’s national botanic garden and a major plant and fungal research institution, combining an arboretum, international living collections, historic landscapes, royal buildings, galleries and landmark Victorian glasshouses such as the Palm House and Temperate House. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 for its continuing contributions to botany, economic botany and garden design.
This is a worthwhile half- or full-day London visit for gardeners, architecture fans, families, photographers and anyone wanting a substantial outdoor day with tropical glasshouses as a weather-proof fallback. The exceptional draw is the combination of serious global plant collections with historic iron-and-glass conservatories, rather than simply a pleasant city park. Skip it if you have under three hours, only want headline London monuments, or dislike long outdoor walks and have no interest in the glasshouses.
Before you go
For ordinary daytime entry, advance booking is advisable because online tickets are cheaper, but it is not a timed, capacity-limited product and daytime tickets do not normally sell out. Buy online from Kew’s official tickets page before travel, or buy at any gate at the higher walk-up price. Christmas at Kew is different: it requires an advance, date-and-time-specific evening ticket and popular December slots sell out.
For the November 1, 2026–January 31, 2027 off-peak period, adult daytime admission is £17 online or £20 at the gate. For the September 2–October 31, 2026 peak period, it is £25 online or £28 at the gate. A Tuesday-only adult ticket is £10 for visits from September 8 through December 29, 2026. Children aged 4–15 are £2 online or £4 at the gate; under-4s enter free. Prices and seasonal periods can change, so select the visit date on Kew’s official ticket page before paying.
No. Christmas at Kew is a separate nighttime illuminated trail, running on selected dates from November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Daytime admission, gate purchases, and third-party daytime vouchers do not admit visitors to the trail. Book an official timed evening slot in advance; 2026 adult tickets start at £29.50 off-peak, while peak tickets cost £37.
Allow 4–5 hours for a strong first visit covering the principal glasshouses and gardens. Allow 6–7 hours if you also want galleries, the Children’s Garden, Treetop Walkway, longer arboretum walks, and a meal. A focused 2-hour visit is only enough for the Palm House, Temperate House, and one short outdoor loop.
Use Victoria Gate (TW9 3JR) for most London visitors: it is about a 7-minute, 500 m walk from Kew Gardens station on the District line’s Richmond branch and London Overground/Mildmay line. Use Elizabeth Gate (Kew Green, TW9 3AE) if arriving at Kew Bridge station, Kew Pier, or by coach; it is about a 10-minute walk from Kew Bridge. Drivers should use Brentford Gate, Ferry Lane, TW9 3AF, where parking is first-come, first-served.
Mostly. The grounds are largely flat with mostly tarmac paths, though some routes are gravel, lawn, or steeper. Wheelchairs can be borrowed at all public gates without pre-booking. Mobility scooters must be reserved in advance and are available at Brentford, Victoria, and Elizabeth Gates. The Palm House allows wheelchairs but not mobility scooters; the Temperate House, Alpine House, and Princess of Wales Conservatory allow both. The upper floor of the Princess of Wales Conservatory is not accessible.
