Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula
Base · 4 nights
The essential urban base: Table Mountain, Cape Point, Boulders penguins, Robben Island, beaches, museums and the country’s deepest restaurant bench. Give it four nights; its weather and geography punish rushed schedules.
Kruger National Park and Greater Kruger
Base · 3–4 nights
South Africa’s defining safari: self-drive camps and value inside Kruger, or exceptional guiding and comfort in private reserves such as Sabi Sand and Timbavati. Three nights is the minimum worth flying for; four or five changes the experience.
Cape Winelands
Base · 1–2 nights
Stellenbosch is the practical, lively base for tastings and serious meals; Franschhoek is prettier and pricier, while Constantia is best treated as a Cape Town half-day. Stay overnight rather than turning good wine country into a rushed day trip.
Garden Route
Base · 3 nights
The N2 coast from Mossel Bay through Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma delivers forests, lagoons, beaches and proper coastal walks. It works only with short driving days and two-night stops, not as a list of roadside viewpoints.
Johannesburg, Soweto and Pretoria
Base · 1–2 nights
The strongest place to understand modern South Africa through apartheid history, Constitution Hill, Soweto and contemporary art and dining. Treat it as an intentional, guided city stay rather than a casual layover before Kruger.
Mpumalanga Panorama Route
Short stop · 1 night
Blyde River Canyon, waterfalls and escarpment roads make a worthwhile one- or two-night bridge between Johannesburg and southern Kruger. Do not try to squeeze it into a same-day drive to a safari lodge.
Whale Coast and Overberg
Short stop · 1 night
Hermanus, De Kelders and Stanford offer cliff walks, fynbos and some of the world’s best land-based southern right whale watching. It earns its place mainly from June to November, especially in spring; otherwise prioritize Cape Town or the Garden Route on a short trip.
Eastern Cape Safari
Base · 2 nights
Addo Elephant National Park and private reserves near Gqeberha are the sensible malaria-free safari add-on to a Garden Route trip. Choose it for easy logistics and family suitability, not as a like-for-like replacement for Greater Kruger.
Durban and the KwaZulu-Natal Coast
Base · 5 nights
A warm Indian Ocean counterpoint to the Cape, with surf, beaches, Umhlanga and a distinct Indian-South African food culture built around Durban curries and bunny chow. Pick your base carefully; beach quality and urban feel vary sharply by neighborhood.
Drakensberg and KwaZulu-Natal Midlands
Base · 3 nights
Basalt mountain scenery, serious hikes, San rock art and battlefields offer a quieter, more physical South Africa than the coast or safari circuit. It needs several nights and real planning; it is not a Durban day trip.
Northern Cape: Kgalagadi, Namaqualand and the Karoo
This is the long-distance, big-sky South Africa: predator-focused desert safari in Kgalagadi, rain-dependent Namaqualand flowers and stark Karoo road-trip country. Go with time, a reliable car and a taste for isolation, not as a Cape Town side trip.
Classic first visit: Cape Town, Winelands and Kruger
9 nightsCape Town and the Cape Peninsula (4 nights) → Cape Winelands (2 nights) → Kruger National Park and Greater Kruger (3 nights)
The right first-timer split: a proper Cape Town stay, Winelands without drinking-and-driving haste, then a domestic flight and three worthwhile safari nights. The Cape Town-to-Kruger transfer effectively consumes a day, so do not pretend this is a seamless overland route.

12 nightsCape Town and the Cape Peninsula (4 nights) → Cape Winelands (2 nights) → Whale Coast and Overberg (1 night) → Garden Route (3 nights) → Eastern Cape Safari (2 nights)
For travelers who would rather drive, hike and eat well than fly north for Kruger. Use the Whale Coast stop in whale season; otherwise fold that night into the Garden Route. Garden Route time should be split between bases such as Wilderness and Plettenberg Bay or Tsitsikamma, not spent grinding along the N2. Finish around Addo/Gqeberha and fly onward.

14 nightsCape Town and the Cape Peninsula (4 nights) → Cape Winelands (1 night) → Garden Route (3 nights) → Johannesburg, Soweto and Pretoria (1 night) → Mpumalanga Panorama Route (1 night) → Kruger National Park and Greater Kruger (4 nights)
This is the ambitious version that earns its transfers. Drive the Cape section, fly from Gqeberha to Johannesburg, then use the Panorama Route as an overnight break before Kruger. The Winelands is deliberately short here: the extra safari night matters more than another vineyard lunch. Do not add Durban; the itinerary is already full.

A second-trip route for travelers who want history, serious safari, hiking and warm-water coast rather than another Cape road trip. Split the KwaZulu-Natal coast time between Durban or Umhlanga and the St Lucia/iSimangaliso area. Fly from Durban to Cape Town rather than wasting days crossing the country by road.
