Papua New Guinea is open to leisure tourists, but travel is high-friction and high-risk. Official advisories warn about serious crime, tribal violence, civil unrest, kidnapping, and infrastructure problems, so independent travel requires strong planning and caution. Visitor arrivals are still happening, but recent reporting shows demand has softened and safety concerns remain a major drag.
