Antananarivo
Base · 1–3 days
The necessary base and the place to understand Merina political history: work through the Upper Town and Rova, then the markets and lake districts rather than trying to tick off the whole congested city in a day.
Ambohimanga Royal Hill
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
The region’s essential excursion: a fortified Merina royal city with tombs, palaces, sacred trees and views across the rice plain. Go with a guide; the meaning is in the royal and living ritual landscape, not monumental ruins.
Avaradrano Sacred Hills
Short stop · 0.5 days
The rice-country belt around Ilafy, Alasora and Talata Volonondry is the worthwhile deeper cut beyond Ambohimanga—old royal settlements, paddies and roadside food rather than polished sights. Combine it with Ambohimanga in one driver-guided day.
Imerintsiatosika and Lemurs' Park
Short stop · 1 day
A practical west-of-Tana outing for reliable, close lemur viewing in a small botanical reserve. It is especially useful on a short trip, but it is an enclosed conservation attraction, not a substitute for forest wildlife.
Manjakandriana and Angavokely
Base · 1–2 days
The best nearby escape when Tana has worn you down: ridge walks, eucalyptus, remnant forest and broad highland views on the RN2 side of the capital. Choose it for a real day of walking, not guaranteed animal sightings.
Andramasina and Lake Tsiazompaniry
Base · 2 days
A quiet southeastern highland extension of paddies, red earth, waterfalls and reservoir scenery. It rewards travelers with a driver and time for an overnight; do not expect resort infrastructure around the lake.
Anjozorobe–Angavo Forest Corridor
Base · 2–3 days
The strongest in-region forest stay: community-linked trails through one of the remaining central-highland forest blocks, with serious birding and possible lemur encounters. Give it two nights—doing it as a day trip wastes too much time on the road.
Ankazobe and Ambohitantely Special Reserve
Base · 2 days
The far-northwest conservation extension for birders, botanists and travelers who value subtle highland forest and grassland over easy spectacle. Access and lodging are basic, and wet-season approaches can require a 4WD.
Ivato and Ambohidratrimo
Short stop · 1 day
The airport-side fringe is mainly useful for arrival and departure nights, with Ambohidratrimo’s historic hill and Croc Farm as optional time-fillers. Stay here for flight logistics, not as a replacement for central Antananarivo.
Intelligent first look
4 daysAntananarivo (2 days) → Ambohimanga Royal Hill (0.5 day) → Avaradrano Sacred Hills (0.5 day) → Imerintsiatosika and Lemurs' Park (1 day)
The right short stay for first-timers: give Tana two geographically focused days, then pair Ambohimanga with the lesser-known sacred hills rather than treating each as a separate excursion. Lemurs’ Park is the efficient final-day wildlife stop, not a claim to have done rainforest Madagascar.

7 daysAntananarivo (2 days) → Ambohimanga Royal Hill (1 day) → Manjakandriana and Angavokely (1 day) → Anjozorobe–Angavo Forest Corridor (3 days)
For travelers who want both the capital’s Merina history and an actual forest stay. Angavokely supplies a close-in hiking day; Anjozorobe gets the time it deserves, with two nights and a full guided forest day rather than a punishing return drive.

A serious in-region nature itinerary for hikers, birders and repeat visitors. The return night in Tana is deliberate: do not attempt a heroic Anjozorobe-to-Ambohitantely shortcut on uncertain tracks. Save the far-northwest reserve for travelers who appreciate subtle forest, grassland and birds over easy lemur sightings.

For a traveler who genuinely likes highland walking, Merina landscapes and low-key conservation areas. It gives Andramasina an overnight instead of reducing it to a long car day, builds in a Tana reset before the Ambohitantely leg, and ends near the airport rather than gambling on a rural transfer before a flight.
