Milan
Base · 3 nights
Give it two or three real days for the Duomo terraces, Brera, the Last Supper, Navigli and contemporary architecture—not just an airport night. It is the region’s best rail hub, but fair-week hotel prices can be brutal.
Lake Como
Base · 2–3 nights
Base in Varenna for rail access, Como town for year-round convenience, or Tremezzina/Menaggio for central-lake ferries. Come for villas, gardens and mountain drama; avoid driving the central lake in peak season.
Bergamo
Base · 2 nights
Città Alta, enclosed by Venetian walls above the modern lower city, is Lombardia’s most satisfying compact art-city stay. Spend a night rather than reducing it to a hurried Milan day trip.
Brescia
Base · 2 nights
A substantial city of Roman remains, the Santa Giulia complex and a hilltop castle, with far fewer tour groups than Milan or Como. It is an excellent base for the eastern part of the region.
Franciacorta
Sparkling-wine country between Brescia and Lake Iseo, best approached through booked cellar visits and long lunches rather than improvised public transport. Pair it with Brescia or Iseo, ideally with a driver or car.
Lake Iseo and Monte Isola
Short stop · 1 night
A lower-key lake alternative to Como, with Monte Isola for ferry rides, walking and cycling. It lacks Como’s grand villas, which is precisely why it feels less staged and crowded.
Lake Garda
Base · 2 nights
Use Desenzano as the practical rail base, visit Sirmione early or late, and choose Salò or Gardone Riviera for a calmer stay. Lombardia’s shore combines Roman sites, promenades and a warmer, more active lake atmosphere than Como.
Mantua
Base · 3 nights
A calm Renaissance court city with Palazzo Ducale, Palazzo Te and distinctive pumpkin-and-rice cooking. Give it two nights; it is too far from Milan for a satisfying quick day trip.
Valtellina
Base · 2 nights
This long Alpine valley is for pizzoccheri, bresaola, terraced Nebbiolo vineyards, thermal baths and real mountain time. Base in Bormio for resort comfort or Tirano/Sondrio for valley travel, and allow at least two nights.
Pavia
Short stop · 1 night
A brick Gothic university town on the Ticino, useful for slowing down after Milan and for visiting the Certosa monastery outside town. It is an easy half- or full-day escape, not a replacement for Bergamo or Mantua.
Cremona
Short stop · 1 night
The violin-making city is a worthwhile one-night stop for Stradivari heritage, the Torrazzo and strong local salumi. Stay longer only if instrument making is the main reason for the trip.
Milan and Lake Como, without overstuffing it
5 nightsMilan (3 nights) → Lake Como (2 nights)
The best short first trip: give Milan proper time, then move to Varenna or Tremezzina for ferries, villas and one unhurried central-lake day. Do not dilute it with Garda or Mantua.

8 nightsMilan (3 nights) → Bergamo (2 nights) → Brescia (2 nights) → Lake Iseo and Monte Isola (1 night)
For travelers who want food, Roman remains, wine country and a lake that is not performing for Lake Como crowds. Bergamo deserves an overnight; Brescia is the practical base for Franciacorta and Lake Iseo.

10 nightsMilan (3 nights) → Lake Como (3 nights) → Bergamo (2 nights) → Lake Garda (2 nights)
A first-timer’s longer route that stays disciplined: Milan and Bergamo for cities, Como for villas and ferries, then Desenzano as the sensible Lake Garda base for Sirmione. It sees two lakes well instead of claiming to see all four.

14 nightsMilan (3 nights) → Pavia (1 night) → Cremona (1 night) → Mantua (3 nights) → Brescia (2 nights) → Bergamo (2 nights) → Valtellina (2 nights)
A deeper-cut route for travelers who care about Renaissance courts, regional food, wine and mountain time as much as famous lake views. Mantua gets the time it needs; Brescia can absorb a Franciacorta day; finish in Bormio or Tirano/Sondrio rather than treating Valtellina as a rushed excursion.
