Things to Do in Chiaia — Campania: Top Attractions, Tours & Tickets

#1Castel dell'OvoMustSanta Lucia, Piazza del Plebiscito and Municipio4.6(36,000)

Naples's seafront castle is a defining silhouette and a useful anchor for understanding the bay rather than a deep indoor museum visit. Use it as the start or finish of a waterfront walk, ideally with time for the views and the Borgo Marinari below.

1h FreeGo early in the morning or near dusk, when the waterfront is at its best and tour groups thin out.

Pairs with: Lungomare · Piazza del Plebiscito · Royal Palace of Naples

#2Naples UndergroundMustChiaia4.7(10,000)

The underground tour gives first-timers a memorable physical sense of Naples's layered city beneath the hectic historic center. It works best as a guided, contained experience between street-level sights, not as a substitute for seeing the old town itself.

1.5h Timed entryTake an early departure or visit on a weekday to avoid long queues.

Reserve a departure in advance for weekends and busy travel months, or expect to wait for the next available tour.

Pairs with: Cappella Sansevero · Naples Cathedral · San Domenico Maggiore

#3LungomareMustChiaia4.7(22)

The seafront promenade is essential Naples atmosphere: it links big views of Vesuvius and the bay with everyday strolling, running, and aperitivo life. Walk at least the Castel dell'Ovo stretch even if your time is tight.

1.3h FreeCome at sunset on a weekday for the best light; mornings are quieter.

Pairs with: Castel dell'Ovo · Piazza del Plebiscito · Fontana della Sirena

#4Cappella SanseveroMustVomero

The Veiled Christ and the chapel's intensely crafted sculptures make this Naples's most concentrated art experience, despite its small scale. Book it as a fixed timed stop, then explore the surrounding old-town lanes without trying to rush the visit.

45m Sells out — book weeks aheadTake the first available slot or a late-afternoon weekday entry.

Reserve an online timed entry well ahead for popular dates; prime slots can disappear weeks in advance.

Pairs with: Naples Underground · San Domenico Maggiore · Gesù Nuovo

#5National Archaeological Museum of NaplesMustSanità and Capodimonte

This is the essential museum for making sense of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the Roman world around Naples, with a collection strong enough to merit a dedicated visit. Give it time rather than treating it as a quick add-on after an excavation day.

3h Timed entryArrive at opening or start after lunch, when the morning influx has eased.

Advance booking is wise in high season, especially if you need a particular arrival time.

Pairs with: Cappella Sansevero · Gesù Nuovo · Santa Chiara

#6Royal Palace of NaplesMustSanta Lucia, Piazza del Plebiscito and Municipio

The Royal Palace supplies the Bourbon-scale context that the grand square outside only hints at, with ceremonial interiors that explain Naples's former status as a capital. Pair it with the piazza and San Carlo rather than visiting it as an isolated museum.

1.5h Timed entryGo close to opening on a weekday for the least crowded rooms.

Book ahead in busy periods if you want to lock in a time; otherwise same-day availability is often possible.

Pairs with: Piazza del Plebiscito · Real Teatro San Carlo · Castel dell'Ovo

#7Real Teatro San CarloMustSanta Lucia, Piazza del Plebiscito and Municipio

Europe's oldest continuously active opera house is both an architectural landmark and a reminder that Naples was once a major European music capital. Take a tour if it suits your schedule, or better still see a performance if the program and dress-up logistics appeal.

1h Book aheadA daytime tour is easiest to combine with nearby sights; arrive early for an evening performance.

Book tours and especially performances ahead; desirable performance dates can sell out.

Pairs with: Royal Palace of Naples · Piazza del Plebiscito · Galleria Umberto I

#8Piazza del PlebiscitoMustSanta Lucia, Piazza del Plebiscito and Municipio

Naples's great civic square is the right place to absorb the city's Bourbon grandeur and to orient yourself between the palace, San Carlo, and the waterfront. It is an open-air stop rather than a lengthy visit, but it belongs on every first itinerary.

25m FreeVisit early for photographs with fewer people, then return around dusk for the atmosphere.

Pairs with: Royal Palace of Naples · Real Teatro San Carlo · Lungomare

#9Parco Vergiliano a PiedigrottaShouldMergellina4.3(722)

This compact hilltop park rewards a westward walk with greenery, views, and a more reflective side of Naples than the central sights provide. It is best used as a short scenic detour around Piedigrotta, not confused with the much larger Virgiliano Park in Posillipo.

45m FreeLate afternoon gives softer light and a cooler walk uphill.

Pairs with: Chiesa di Santa Maria di Piedigrotta · Fontana della Sirena · Lungomare

#10PetraioShouldVomero5(34)

The Petraio is one of the most evocative ways to experience Naples's vertical geography, with narrow lanes, stairs, and changing city-and-bay views. It is rewarding for confident walkers who want a lived-in alternative to the central sightseeing circuit.

1h FreeWalk it in daylight, preferably late afternoon, and wear shoes with grip.

Pairs with: Salita del Petraio · Castello Aselmeyer · Chiesa di Santa Teresa a Chiaia

#11Salita del PetraioShouldVomero4.7(135)

This steep stair route is the practical, scenic core of the Petraio experience, connecting Chiaia with the higher city through everyday Naples rather than formal monuments. Do it for the walk and views, not as a separate attraction from Petraio.

45m FreeUse it by day and avoid it in heavy rain, when the paving can be slippery.

Pairs with: Petraio · Castello Aselmeyer · Chiesa di Santa Teresa a Chiaia

#12Gesù NuovoShouldVomero

Behind its unusual former-palace façade is one of the historic center's richest Baroque interiors, filled with work by leading Neapolitan artists. It is free and easy to combine with the neighboring Santa Chiara complex, making it a high-value church stop.

30m FreeGo in the morning or between services for a quieter interior.

Pairs with: Santa Chiara · Cappella Sansevero · National Archaeological Museum of Naples

#13Santa ChiaraShouldVomero

The church complex is especially worth visiting for its cloister, where majolica decoration offers a welcome visual change from Naples's dark Baroque interiors. Allow enough time for the complex rather than merely peeking into the church across from Gesù Nuovo.

The church is free, while the cloister and associated complex require admission bought on site.

Pairs with: Gesù Nuovo · Cappella Sansevero · National Archaeological Museum of Naples

Pairs with: Museo Pignatelli · Chiesa di San Pasquale a Chiaia · Castello Aselmeyer

#16Naples AquariumIf timeChiaia4.2(2,500)

The aquarium is a modest, historic science stop within the Villa Comunale rather than a destination on the scale of a major modern aquarium. Choose it for a rainy-hour diversion or when traveling with children; otherwise prioritize Naples's art and archaeology.

45m Walk upWeekday mornings are the least hectic.

Buy on arrival when open, but confirm hours because programming can be limited.

Pairs with: Darwin-Dohrn Museum (DaDoM) · Lungomare · Museo Pignatelli

15m FreeAvoid Mass times.

Pairs with: Petraio · Salita del Petraio · Castello Aselmeyer

#24Castello AselmeyerNicheChiaia4.5(152)

This eccentric, castle-like private residence is a visual curiosity on Chiaia's hillside rather than a conventional visitable castle. Seek it out only if you are already walking the Petraio routes and enjoy architectural oddities from the street.

10m FreeDaylight is best, since it is chiefly an exterior sight.

Pairs with: Petraio · Salita del Petraio · Chiesa di Santa Teresa a Chiaia

#25Chiesa di San Giuseppe a ChiaiaNicheChiaia4.6(110)
