First visit? Stay in Chiaia.
Chiaia is the best first-visit compromise: polished but still recognizably Neapolitan, walkable to Piazza del Plebiscito and the waterfront, and considerably easier to come home to than the tight, noisy lanes of Centro Storico or Quartieri Spagnoli. Base yourself near Piazza dei Martiri or Via dei Mille rather than at the far western end if central sightseeing matters. The trade-off is price and a longer walk to the decumani; choose Centro Storico instead only if waking up inside the old city matters more than calmer streets and seafront evenings.
luxury →
Naples’ most credible luxury base: the Piazza dei Martiri–Via dei Mille side has the boutiques, handsome buildings, polished dining and easy Lungomare walks that justify higher hotel rates. It is more residential and useful than isolated Posillipo, while still close to Piazza del Plebiscito.
value →
This is the sensible value alternative to Chiaia: Metro Line 1 at Dante and Museo, the Archaeological Museum on the doorstep, and a walkable approach to Centro Storico without paying seafront premiums. Check the exact address, as some return walks are uphill and the quieter residential streets are not especially lively at night.
family →
Broad public spaces, the waterfront, major sights and straightforward walks make this easier with children than the old centre’s scooters and cramped lanes. Municipio adds Metro Line 1 and ferry access. Avoid the most port-facing, traffic-heavy blocks if quiet at night is important.
nightlife →
For travelers who want bars, street life and central Naples right outside the door, the Spanish Quarters and Toledo deliver more immediate energy than Chiaia. Stay close to Via Toledo or a well-reviewed street rather than deep in the tightest lanes; noise and late returns through emptier side streets are the cost.
quiet →
Mergellina gives the most relaxed practical waterfront stay: a long promenade, local cafés and Metro Line 2/regional-rail access. It is better for slow evenings than a short, sights-heavy first visit, since Centro Storico is not a casual walk away.
rail-day-trips →
For repeated early departures to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento or elsewhere, sleeping by Napoli Centrale/Garibaldi saves real time and luggage hassle: mainline rail, Circumvesuviana and Metro connections converge here. Treat it as a logistics choice, not a romantic Naples base; choose a hotel carefully and do evenings elsewhere.
return-visitor →
Vomero is the right reset for someone who has already done the old-town intensity: panoramic viewpoints, a residential rhythm and Metro Line 1/funicular links downhill. It is more comfortable than central Naples, but every trip home involves transit or a substantial climb, and it lacks Centro Storico’s spontaneous nightlife.
Avoid sleeping near Immediate Piazza Garibaldi/Napoli Centrale station blocks: Excellent for an overnight before an early train, but the station environment is hectic, noisy and traffic-choked; luggage walks are unpleasant and the evening experience is thin. Do not book here merely because it is cheap if this is your first leisure stay in Naples.
Avoid sleeping near Deep Quartieri Spagnoli side lanes: A room near Via Toledo can be brilliantly central; a superficially similar listing deep in the lanes can mean scooters, bar noise, variable building quality and uncomfortable late-night navigation. Wikivoyage specifically advises avoiding the Quarters’ empty streets after dark.
Avoid sleeping near Sanità and Capodimonte: Compelling daytime territory, especially for its heritage sites and museum, but not an effortless visitor base: weak direct rail access, gradients and inconvenient returns from central Naples. Wikivoyage advises avoiding Sanità after dark.
Avoid sleeping near Posillipo: Book only when views, privacy and a residential escape are the trip’s point. Its hills and distance turn taxis and bus planning into a recurring task, making it a poor base for first-time sightseeing or rail day trips.

ChiaiaFirst-timer default
Seafront polish, boutiques, late aperitivo
Naples at its most polished: affluent streets around Piazza dei Martiri, Via dei Mille and Via Chiaia, luxury shopping, good bars and the Lungomare promenade. It is a comfortable, handsome base rather than the city’s rawest or most historic experience; the old centre is walkable but not at the door.
Vs. others: Pick Chiaia over Centro Storico if you want a calmer, smarter base and seafront evenings; pick Centro Storico if medieval lanes, churches and street life matter more than polish.
Piazza Amedeo on Metro Line 2 is useful for the central station corridor; the Chiaia end of the waterfront is otherwise best handled on foot or by bus/taxi. Piazza del Plebiscito and the seafront are walkable; the historic core is a longer walk.
Best for: first-timers, luxury, couples, foodies, quiet
Hotels and restaurants are often pricier than elsewhere in Naples. · Aperitivo streets can be noisy late, especially in warm weather. · Luxury-shopping streets are not where to look for the city’s most unvarnished, inexpensive eating.

The essential, chaotic old Naples
This is the dense historic core of decumani, churches, courtyards, workshops, pizza queues and tiny lanes: the place to spend serious wandering time. It rewards sleeping close to the action, but it is a maze, and the experience depends heavily on the exact street and building.
Vs. others: Pick Centro Storico over Chiaia if you want Naples’ historic fabric at breakfast and midnight; pick Chiaia if you want wider streets, the sea and a more orderly base.
Line 1 stations at Dante, Museo, Università and Duomo sit around or near its edges; much of the district is pedestrian wandering between them. The central station is reachable by Metro Line 1 or a substantial walk east.
Best for: first-timers, foodies, budget, return-visitors, nightlife
The alleys are confusing, noisy and uneven underfoot. · Tourist-facing streets have plenty of mediocre, queue-driven dining. · Use normal big-city precautions for pickpocketing and avoid empty or dim lanes late.

Compressed, loud, intensely local
The Spanish Quarters climb immediately west of Via Toledo in a tight grid of balconies, scooters, shrines, laundry and small bars. Via Toledo itself is a major shopping-and-transit spine; a room one block away can feel entirely different. It is exhilarating and central, not serene.
Vs. others: Pick Quartieri Spagnoli over Chiaia if you want maximum central energy and lower-cost character; pick Chiaia if you value calmer nights and a less cramped walk home.
Toledo and Municipio on Metro Line 1 make this one of the easiest central areas for transport; Piazza del Plebiscito, Galleria Umberto I and the port area are close on foot. The lanes themselves are walked, not driven.
Best for: first-timers, budget, nightlife, foodies, return-visitors
Street noise, scooters and late-night bar activity are real. · Accommodation quality varies wildly behind similar-looking listings. · The Quarters are notable by day, but Wikivoyage advises avoiding their empty streets after dark.

Monumental waterfront, port-side convenience
This is the broad, ceremonial Naples of Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace, Castel Nuovo, the Galleria and the waterfront toward Castel dell’Ovo. It feels more open and visitor-friendly than the old centre, with immediate ferry and sightseeing advantages, though its interior streets can be businesslike rather than neighborly.
Vs. others: Pick Santa Lucia and Municipio over Chiaia if ferries, the port and major monuments matter most; pick Chiaia if boutiques, residential dining and a longer seafront neighborhood feel appeal more.
Municipio is on Metro Line 1 and is close to the ferry terminals; Toledo is walkable. The historic centre begins uphill and inland, while Chiaia is an easy waterfront walk west.
Best for: first-timers, families, luxury, rail-day-trips, quiet
Port-adjacent blocks can feel functional and traffic-heavy rather than atmospheric. · Dining immediately around headline sights can skew tourist-oriented. · It is less useful than Garibaldi for early mainline-train departures.

Local seafront, boats and evening strolls
At Chiaia’s western end, Mergellina is a lived-in waterfront district of small harbors, seafood restaurants, cafés and the long Via Caracciolo promenade. It has a more local and relaxed feel than Piazza dei Martiri, but it is distinctly farther from the historic sights.
Vs. others: Pick Mergellina over Chiaia if you want a quieter, more residential waterfront and rail access; pick Chiaia if you want easier walks to Piazza del Plebiscito and central evening life.
Mergellina has Metro Line 2 and regional rail connections; the waterfront is excellent on foot. Reaching the old centre usually means a train, bus, taxi or a long walk rather than popping around the corner.
Best for: quiet, families, couples, foodies, return-visitors
It is too far west to be the most efficient sightseeing base. · Waterfront restaurant prices and quality vary, so do not choose solely by the view. · The promenade is lively and generally well populated at night, but rooms near it can still catch traffic and evening noise.

Hilltop views, residential breathing room
Vomero is Naples’ more spacious, middle-class hill district: shopping streets, apartments, cafés and the Certosa di San Martino/Castel Sant’Elmo viewpoint. It offers relief from the centre’s intensity, but it is a separate hilltop town in practical terms, not a convenient extension of the old city.
Vs. others: Pick Vomero over Chiaia if quiet residential evenings and panoramic views outweigh centrality; pick Chiaia if you want the sea and can walk to major central sights.
Metro Line 1 serves the hill, including Vanvitelli and Medaglie d’Oro; funiculars connect downhill toward central Naples. Walking down can be pleasant but walking back up is a commitment.
Best for: families, quiet, return-visitors, value
Every return from the centre involves a climb or transit. · It can feel detached from the Naples visitors came to see. · Its calmer character means less spontaneous late-night action than Centro Storico or the Spanish Quarters.

Transport-first, gritty market edge
The area around Napoli Centrale/Garibaldi is the practical rail hub, with Porta Nolana’s market energy nearby. It is useful for Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sorrento and airport-linked logistics, but few visitors find the immediate station blocks charming enough for a leisure-first stay.
Vs. others: Pick Garibaldi over Chiaia only if early trains and maximum transport convenience outweigh atmosphere; pick Chiaia if you want to enjoy where you sleep.
Napoli Centrale/Garibaldi is the city’s key rail interchange, with mainline trains, Circumvesuviana services and Metro Line 1/Line 2 connections. It is efficient for day trips, not especially walkable to Chiaia or the western waterfront.
Best for: rail-day-trips, budget, one-night stopovers
The immediate station environment is hectic, noisy and can feel rough around the edges. · Street and traffic conditions make luggage walks unpleasant. · Budget hotels are plentiful, but a cheap room here can trade away the evening experience.

Museum doorstep, quieter old-town edge
Northwest of the densest old centre, this is a useful blend of the National Archaeological Museum, the Dante edge of Centro Storico and increasingly appealing residential streets toward Materdei. It has more breathing room than the decumani without losing the ability to walk into them.
Vs. others: Pick Museo and Dante over Centro Storico if you want easy museum access and somewhat calmer nights; pick Centro Storico if you want to be inside the oldest, busiest lanes.
Museo and Dante are on Metro Line 1; Museo also links with Line 2 via the nearby Cavour station. The Archaeological Museum is immediate, and the historic centre is downhill or a short walk away.
Best for: first-timers, foodies, value, return-visitors, quiet
The walk back from the core can be uphill depending on the address. · It has fewer waterfront and evening-stroll options than Chiaia. · Some surrounding streets are residential and subdued rather than picturesque.

Powerful history beyond the polished centre
Sanità is a dense, working-class valley north of the historic centre, known for major underground and burial-site attractions and an intense local character; Capodimonte rises above with the museum, palace and park. Together they are rewarding for an informed visit, but awkward as a conventional first hotel base.
Vs. others: Pick Sanità over Centro Storico for a more local, less polished side of Naples and specific heritage sites; pick Centro Storico for simple sightseeing logistics and a broader choice of lodging.
The National Archaeological Museum/Museo area is the closest strong Metro Line 1 access for the lower edge; Capodimonte is primarily reached by bus or taxi. Walking involves gradients and requires confidence with the route.
Best for: return-visitors, foodies, travelers interested in local history
Wikivoyage specifically advises avoiding Sanità after dark, despite its daytime sights. · The hill and weaker rail access make it inefficient for most itineraries. · It is not a place to rely on aimless late-night wandering or a quick walk back from Chiaia.

Bay views, villas, inconvenient geography
Posillipo is the prestigious hillside peninsula west of Mergellina: villa-lined roads, dramatic bay views and a far more suburban rhythm than central Naples. It is worth visiting for scenery and a long lunch, not usually for making a first encounter with Naples logistically difficult.
Vs. others: Pick Posillipo over Chiaia if privacy, views and a residential escape are the point; pick Chiaia if you need practical access to central sights, dining and transport.
There is no central-metro convenience comparable to Chiaia or Centro Storico; travel is largely by bus, taxi and walking on hilly roads. Mergellina is the nearest useful rail-side district.
Best for: luxury, quiet, couples, return-visitors
The views come with distance and hills. · Taxis can become necessary, especially at night. · It can feel isolated from the historic centre and from Naples’ everyday street life.
