Provinsi Bali Travel Guide — Indonesia

Pace: For less than a week, use one south-coast base plus Ubud, or stay in Sanur/Ubud and make selective day trips. With 8–10 nights, take two or three bases—south, Ubud/interior, then east or north; with two weeks, add the Nusas or a real north/west stay. Bali looks small on a map but is slow in practice: Canggu or Uluwatu to Ubud commonly takes 2–3 hours, Ubud to Amed or Munduk 2½–4 hours, and the south to Lovina or Pemuteran 4–6 hours.
When to go: Go in May–June or September for Bali’s best balance: mostly dry weather, greener landscapes than peak season, and less punishing crowds and pricing than July–August. July–August is driest and best for surf and clear-sky outings, but traffic, hotel rates and Nusa boat demand are at their worst. November–March is hot, humid and lush, with heavier rain and less reliable seas; avoid scheduling flights, transfers or boats during Nyepi, when the island shuts down for 24 hours.
Daily budget: Rp1,500,000–3,000,000 per day

Bali is a compact but intensely varied Indonesian province: the main island plus Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. Beyond the resort image, it is a place of living Balinese Hindu culture—daily offerings, temples, gamelan, ceremonies and working subak irrigation landscapes—set among surf coasts, rice country, volcanic uplands and a highly developed villa-and-resort economy. It rewards travelers who treat it as several distinct regions rather than one easy beach island.

Where to go

Base · 3 nights

Ubud

Bali’s best all-round inland base for temples, dance, crafts, rice walks and serious food. Central streets are clogged and tourist-facing, so stay on the edges or get out early for the countryside.

Explore Ubud

Sanur

Base · 1–3 nights

The south coast’s most practical low-stress base: calm water, a walkable seafront and the useful departure point for Nusa boats. It trades nightlife and surf for ease.

first-timersfamiliesolder travelers

Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula

Base · 3 nights

Clifftop villas, big Indian Ocean views, serious surf and Bali’s most convincing sunset setting at Uluwatu Temple. Stay here for the coast itself, not for easy transport or sidewalks.

surferscouplesvilla groups

Seminyak, Legian and Kuta

The original southwest tourism strip is useful for airport proximity, restaurants, shopping, nightlife and beginner surf. Seminyak is the polished option; Kuta is louder and more commercial.

Canggu, Berawa and Pererenan

Come for black-sand surf, cafés, gyms, villas and a social international crowd. The trade-off is construction, traffic and a poor setup for day-tripping across the island.

Sidemen

Base · 2 nights

A slower rural counterweight to Ubud, with rice fields, weaving villages and occasional Mount Agung views. It works as a quiet inland stay and a base for Besakih, not as a beach or dining destination.

Amed and Tulamben

Base · 3 nights

Bali’s low-key northeast is for diving, snorkeling, volcanic beaches and sunrise rather than resort polish. Stay overnight; it is too far from the south to treat as a casual day trip.

Kintamani and Mount Batur

The volcanic caldera brings cool air, Lake Batur views and the island’s classic sunrise hike. Overnight nearby rather than joining a punishing middle-of-the-night transfer from the coast.

Munduk, Bedugul and Jatiluwih

Base · 2 nights

This is highland Bali: waterfalls, crater lakes, coffee country and the substantial rice terraces at Jatiluwih. Munduk is the right overnight base; expect mist, rain and no nightlife.

Pemuteran and West Bali

Base · 3 nights

Pemuteran is the northwestern base for reef snorkeling, diving and Menjangan Island, with a much slower rhythm than the south. The journey is long, so it earns its place on longer itineraries only.

Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan

Base · 3 nights

The Nusas are a separate boat trip, not a south-Bali add-on: choose Penida for cliffs and rougher adventure, or Lembongan for an easier beach-and-snorkel stay. Give them at least two nights to avoid spending the visit in boats, vans and queues.

Don't miss

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple

This lakeside water temple is one of Bali’s most recognizable images and a strong reason to go into the cooler Bedugul highlands. Visit early, then make it part of a north-central Bali circuit rather than a standalone drive.

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

Jatiluwih is the more expansive, working-rural alternative to Tegallalang, with wide views and walks through Bali’s UNESCO-recognized subak irrigation landscape. Give it enough time for a trail and lunch rather than treating it as a roadside photo stop.

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

This is Ubud’s easiest combination of forest walk, temple setting and wildlife encounter. The macaques are the point, but keep food, glasses and loose items secured and do not turn the visit into a close-contact photo session.

Tanah Lot

The offshore temple is Bali’s classic sunset sight, more important for its setting and ritual silhouette than for interior access. It is crowded and commercial, but still earns its place if you accept it as an early-evening stop.

Uluwatu Temple

Perched on a sea cliff at Bali’s southern tip, Uluwatu is one of the island’s defining temple settings and the best major sight on the Bukit Peninsula. Time it for late afternoon and the Kecak performance if that appeals, while treating the monkeys with the same caution as elsewhere.

Besakih Great Temple

Bali’s Mother Temple is the island’s largest and most symbolically important temple complex, set on the slopes of Mount Agung. It offers a more consequential religious experience than many photogenic smaller temples, though dress respectfully and be alert to unofficial-guide approaches.

Getting your bearings

Numbers match the places above; small dots are the headline sights.

The mental map

Think in six zones: the congested south—airport, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur and the Bukit/Uluwatu; the cultural central interior around Ubud and Sidemen; the volcano-and-lakes highlands of Kintamani, Bedugul, Munduk and Jatiluwih; the quieter dry east around Amed and Karangasem; the slow north and west around Lovina, Pemuteran and Menjangan; and the Nusa islands. The Nusas are not a casual south-Bali add-on: they require boat timing, weather tolerance and their own overnight plan.

When to go

Go in May–June or September for Bali’s best balance: mostly dry weather, greener landscapes than peak season, and less punishing crowds and pricing than July–August.

Pacing a visit

For less than a week, use one south-coast base plus Ubud, or stay in Sanur/Ubud and make selective day trips.

Book before you land

Uluwatu Temple’s sunset Kecak performance, especially July–August, school holidays and Christmas–New Year · Sanur fast boats to Nusa Penida/Lembongan/Ceningan in peak season or around major holidays · Popular diving trips and dive courses in Amed/Tulamben, Pemuteran/Menjangan and the Nusa islands during peak season

Getting in

DPSI Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, Denpasar
Bali’s only major airport and the default gateway for almost every international and domestic arrival. It is in the congested south: allow roughly 30–60 minutes to Sanur/Seminyak in light traffic, longer to Canggu or Uluwatu, and do not plan a same-day dash to Amed, Lovina or Pemuteran after a long-haul flight.
Flights and transfers into Kuta
Sanur Harbour
The practical fast-boat gateway for Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. It works best from a Sanur base; boats are weather-sensitive, can be crowded, and are not a sensible connection to gamble on immediately before an international flight.
Flights and transfers into Sanur
Padang Bai Harbour
The east-Bali ferry and fast-boat port, mainly useful for Lombok/Gili connections and some Nusa routes. It is more logical from Ubud, Sidemen or east Bali than from Canggu or Uluwatu, but still needs a deliberate transfer day.

Questions worth settling

How many days do I need for a first trip to Bali?

For under a week, use one south-coast base plus Ubud, or stay in Sanur and Ubud with selective day trips. With 8–10 nights, add an east or north base such as Amed and Tulamben or Munduk; with two weeks, add the Nusa islands or Pemuteran and West Bali.

Where should I stay on my first visit: Sanur, Ubud, Seminyak, Canggu or Uluwatu?

Choose Sanur for a calm, practical beach base and easy Nusa-boat access; pair it with Ubud for culture, rice-country walks and food. Choose Seminyak for restaurants, shopping and nightlife, Uluwatu and the Bukit for surf and cliff scenery, or Canggu only if its café-and-surf social scene matters more than easy island exploring.

Which parts of Bali combine well in one itinerary?

Sanur or Seminyak plus Ubud is the simplest first-time combination. Add Sidemen or Amed and Tulamben after Ubud for a slower inland or diving-focused finish; use Munduk, Bedugul and Jatiluwih or Pemuteran and West Bali only when you have enough nights for the long road transfers.

Can I visit Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan as a day trip?

Treat the Nusas as a separate overnight trip, not a casual south-Bali add-on: stay at least two nights. Fast boats from Sanur are weather-sensitive and can be crowded, so do not schedule a Nusa crossing immediately before an international flight.

What are the visa and entry requirements for Bali?

Many nationalities can use a 30-day Visa on Arrival or e-VOA, generally extendable once, while ASEAN nationals and some other passport holders may be visa-free. Check current Indonesian Immigration rules, eligible passports and onward-ticket requirements before flying; Bali also has a separate Rp150,000 foreign-tourist levy payable through the official Love Bali system.

Do I need a driver, and how hard is it to get around Bali?

Use a private car and driver for airport-to-hotel transfers, changing bases and full inland days; ride-hailing is most useful in parts of the south and Ubud, not remote areas. Bali is slow by road: Canggu or Uluwatu to Ubud commonly takes 2–3 hours, while Ubud to Amed or Munduk can take 2½–4 hours, so avoid cross-island day trips.

When is the best time to visit Bali?

May–June or September offer the best balance of mostly dry weather, green scenery and lighter crowds than July–August. July–August is driest but busiest and most expensive; November–March is hotter, wetter and less reliable for Nusa crossings and sea-based plans.

What should I book before arriving?

Book Uluwatu Temple's sunset Kecak performance ahead for July–August, school holidays and Christmas–New Year. Also reserve Sanur fast boats to Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Ceningan in peak periods, plus popular diving trips and courses in Amed and Tulamben, Pemuteran and Menjangan, and the Nusa islands.
