Eat
Eat across Delhi rather than limiting yourself to New Delhi proper: Old Delhi is the essential stop for Mughlai cooking, sweets, chaat and market energy, while Khan Market–Defence Colony–Greater Kailash and Hauz Khas are stronger for polished contemporary dining and cafés. Connaught Place is the convenient central fallback, with real range but enough tourist-facing mediocrity to warrant choosing carefully; Lutyens’ Delhi and Aerocity are poor places to hunt for an everyday Delhi meal.
Old Delhi’s Muslim food tradition: seek slow-cooked nihari, kebabs, korma and biryani around Jama Masjid, ideally at lunch or an early dinner rather than at the evening crush. · Delhi-style chaat—golgappa, aloo tikki, papri chaat and dahi bhalla—is a snack or light meal, not merely an appetizer. Chandni Chowk is the classic setting, but crowds and hygiene standards vary sharply stall to stall. · Chole bhature: Delhi’s unapologetically rich breakfast-to-lunch staple of spiced chickpeas with puffed fried bread; save it for a day of walking, not before a long Metro-and-monument itinerary. · Parathas, particularly stuffed, griddled breads in Old Delhi. Go expecting a heavy, fast meal in intensely busy lanes, not a serene brunch. · North Indian/Punjabi restaurant cooking: butter chicken, dal makhani, tandoori meats and paneer are ubiquitous Delhi standards, best judged in a proper meal rather than treated as generic tourist food. · Daulat ki chaat, the fragile, sweetened winter milk foam associated with Old Delhi, is worth seeking in its season; it is not the savoury chaat its name suggests. · Sweets and market snacks: jalebi, rabri-based desserts and freshly fried savouries belong to the Old Delhi grazing experience. Khari Baoli’s spice-market atmosphere is part of the appeal, though it is a working wholesale market rather than a polished food hall. · Modern Indian, regional Indian and international cooking are strongest in the affluent South Delhi dining enclaves—Khan Market, Defence Colony, Greater Kailash and Hauz Khas—where the food can be excellent but the setting is often more polished than representative of the city at large.
