Visas & entry
Hungary is in the Schengen Area. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens can enter freely with valid travel documents; many visitors from the US, Canada, UK, Australia and similar visa-waiver countries may visit the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, but requirements and ETIAS implementation timing should be checked before travel.

Getting around
Trains are useful from Budapest to the main regional cities, but the network is Budapest-radial and cross-country journeys can be slow, indirect or dependent on a change. Use rail for Budapest–Eger, Szeged, Pécs, Debrecen and much of Balaton; rent a car for Tokaj winery hopping, Hortobágy, Villány, western villages or multi-stop Balaton travel. There is no sensible domestic-flight strategy: Hungary is too small for flights to beat rail or driving once airport time is included. Check live MÁV schedules rather than relying on static timetables, particularly during engineering works.
Money
The currency is the Hungarian forint (HUF/Ft), not the euro. Cards are widely accepted in Budapest and larger towns, but carry some cash for small rural businesses, markets and incidental purchases; tipping around 10% is normal when service is not already included, and some restaurants add a service charge.
Daily budget · HUF (Hungarian forint/Ft); Hungary does not use the euro.
