Huangpu
Base · 1–2 days
Start here for the Bund skyline, Yu Garden, People’s Square and the Shanghai Museum. It is crowded and theatrical, but it is the city’s essential first-day contrast of old lanes, colonial facades and Pudong across the river.
Former French Concession and Xuhui
Base · 1–2 days
Shanghai’s best neighborhood walking: plane-tree streets, shikumen lanes, villas, Wukang Road and Fuxing Park. Stay here if cafés, restaurants and lived-in streets matter more than being beside the Bund.
Jing'an
Short stop · 1 day
The most useful all-round base, with strong metro links, hotels, restaurants and easy access to both the historic core and Hongqiao. Come for frictionless city logistics rather than intimate old Shanghai.
Pudong and Lujiazui
Short stop · 1 day
Go for the Shanghai Tower, the riverfront and a serious museum stop such as Shanghai Museum East or China Art Museum. The towers are mandatory once; the district is less rewarding as a nightly walking base.
West Bund and the Expo Waterfront
Short stop · 1 day
This is the calmer counterweight to the Bund: converted industrial buildings, galleries, long riverside paths and room to walk or cycle. Choose a section and linger rather than attempting the whole linear waterfront.
Zhujiajiao and Qingpu
Short stop · 1 day
The municipality’s most workable water-town day trip, with canals, stone bridges, Kezhi Garden and easy Line 17 access. Arrive early on a weekday; the atmosphere drops quickly once tour groups and souvenir traffic take over.
Songjiang
Short stop · 1 day
A scattered but worthwhile second-visit mix of Sheshan’s green space, Guangfulin’s archaeology and Sijing’s snack-friendly old town. Skip Thames Town unless you specifically enjoy strange planned architecture.
Nanxiang and Jiading
Short stop · 1 day
Make this a focused half-day for Nanxiang xiaolongbao and Guyi Garden, not a substitute for central Shanghai. It is the best suburban detour for travelers who care about the origin story behind a signature dish.
Xinchang and Lingang
Short stop · 1 day
Pair Xinchang’s quieter salt-trade old town with Lingang only if you have a full day and a taste for planned-city China. The payoff is the Astronomy Museum, Dishui Lake and broad estuary landscapes—not a beach resort or intimate coastal town.
Chongming Island and Hengsha
Base · 2 days
Shanghai’s real nature break: wetlands, migratory birds, forest parks, farms and quiet cycling roads. It rewards an overnight and deliberate transport planning; trying to cover both sides of the island in a rushed day is a mistake.
Fengjing and Jinshan
Short stop · 1 day
Choose Fengjing for a less polished water town with a genuine link to Jinshan farmer painting and folk-art culture. It is a long excursion, so go only if that local art angle appeals more than Zhujiajiao’s easier canals.
Essential Shanghai with a Water-Town Day
4 daysHuangpu (1 day) → Former French Concession and Xuhui (1 day) → Pudong and Lujiazui (1 day) → Zhujiajiao and Qingpu (1 day)
The correct first visit: give the historic core, concession streets and skyline a full day each, then make one early-start water-town excursion. Base yourself centrally; do not waste this short trip changing hotels.

7 daysHuangpu (1 day) → Former French Concession and Xuhui (1 day) → Jing'an (1 day) → Pudong and Lujiazui (1 day) → West Bund and the Expo Waterfront (1 day) → Zhujiajiao and Qingpu (1 day) → Nanxiang and Jiading (1 day)
For travelers who want more than landmark Shanghai. It adds a proper riverfront-and-gallery day and a focused dumpling-and-garden half-day without turning the trip into a string of exhausting suburban transfers.

9 daysHuangpu (1 day) → Former French Concession and Xuhui (1 day) → Jing'an (1 day) → Pudong and Lujiazui (1 day) → West Bund and the Expo Waterfront (1 day) → Zhujiajiao and Qingpu (1 day) → Songjiang (1 day) → Chongming Island and Hengsha (2 days)
The best longer first trip for travelers who want both the metropolis and a real change of pace. Chongming gets two days because its wetlands, farms and cycling roads are too spread out for a token day trip.

For repeat visitors, urbanists and travelers determined to see the municipality rather than just the city center. The pace is deliberately one outer-district theme per day; stacking distant suburbs simply because they share a map is a bad plan.
