First visit? Stay in Centro / Puerta del Sol.
It is the best compromise in a vertical city: walkable to Casco Vello and the harbour, well supplied with hotels and food, and less awkward with luggage than sleeping deep in the old town. It also keeps both the ferry pier and the rail-station corridor manageable by bus or taxi.
Avoid sleeping near The immediate traffic-heavy blocks around Urzáiz / Vialia Station, Upper O Castro / Gran Vía slopes, Teis / A Guía, The noisiest bar lanes of Casco Vello. They are fine for an early train and often good value, but travelers expecting old-town ambience, harbour views or a pleasant late-night stroll can be disappointed.
